Hydraulic Cement is a type of cement that is used in structures that are below the grade or submerged in water.

Hydraulic cement has great importance in this era where economics plays a very important role in construction as well as in the repair/maintenance of the structure.

It is used in construction to stop leakage in concrete structures as well as masonry structures, as it works like a mortar when mixed with water.

What is Hydraulic Cement ?

Hydraulic cement is a special type of cement that has its own significance due to its usability and characteristics.

It gets hardened when water is mixed as the calcium silicates hydration results in the creation of tiny fibers which get hardened to make the concrete or masonry impervious.

Hydraulic cement is a mixture of Ordinary Portland Cement with the addition of the chemicals that made it suitable for waterproofing and sealing work.

The blend of Ordinary Portland Cement takes 5-10 mins to set in the place where it is used, that is why it is suitable for the construction in the water.

Hydraulic cement is basically a blend of ordinary portland cement, which has four main constituents:-

  • Brownmirellite (4CaO·Al2O3Fe2O3)
  • Alite (3CaO·SiO2)
  • Belite (2CaO·SiO2)
  • Celite/Tricalcium Aluminate (3CaO·Al2O3)

These components decide the chemical and mechanical properties of hydraulic cement.

It is used as per site nature, there are certain chemicals that are added as additives in the cement which are used to increase the setting time, decrease the curing time.

This makes cement suitable for the sites which require a special type of cement.

Types of Hydraulic Cement

  • General Use.
  • High Early Strength.
  • Moderate Sulfate Resistance.
  • High Sulfate Resistance.
  • Low Heat of Hydration.

  • It is basically used to provide strength to the structure which are in contact or submerged in water.
  • Precautions must be taken before using hydraulic cement in cold climates. To prevent defects like freezing and thawing.

How to use Hydraulic Cement

There are certain basic steps for the application of hydraulic cement which makes it more durable and successful in the work in which it is being used.

  • Firstly, the surface/area on which it is used should be clean properly there not be any dirt or any loose particle which reduce the bondage of the cement.
  • There should not be any traces of oil, it should be oil free where cement has to apply.
  • Curing or the proper saturation should be done before 24 hours on the area where hydraulic cement has to be used.
  • The mixture has to be mixed by mechanical mixture for the proper blend.
  • Blend should be done in relatively low speed than a conventional concrete.
  • Addition of water should be as per manufacturer’s recommendation.
  • Do not use excessive water to avoid bleeding and segregation.
  • Apply hydraulic cement as per its requirements.

Advantages of Hydraulic Cement

  • It is used in the repairs for long-lasting and durable results.
  • It sets quickly within 5 minutes after the water is being mixed.
  • It is very easy to use and does not require any skilled labor.
  • It is economic solution for the repair and maintenance of the structures.
  • Cold water always work as a retarder and hot water decreases setting time.
  • It always maintains strength when in contact or submerged in water.
  • Hydraulic cement is not shrinkable.
  • Work speed doesn’t affect by the use of hydraulic cement, as paint can easily apply after the use of hydraulic cement.

Disadvantages of Hydraulic Cement

  • It sets quickly with in 5-10 mins after being mixed with water.
  • It does not work on the temperature below 40 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Not only that, but it can only use for support work and cannot be used as the main cement.
    • Note:- If the problem in concrete is due to condensation, then the hydraulic cement is not suitable for solving the problem. For that, you have to find another solutions.
